The US Federal Reserve received an unwelcomed new year’s present last week with a US CPI reading of 7% – an inflation rate that we haven’t seen since the early 1980s.

 

At just 1.4% a year ago, this is an extraordinary explosion of pricing pressure, which firmly moves inflation to the number 1 priority for policymakers, both fiscal and monetary.
